If you’re looking for a reliable trail buddy, your next safe and sweet equine friend, or a horse that you and your friends or spouse can enjoy endless adventures on, keep reading.  If you’re looking for a freaky fast, catty quick, high caliber athlete that’ll take you to the winner’s circle in the speed events, this probably not your guy.  Diego is one of the most calm and non-reactive individuals I’ve started. From ride one, he’s never offered an ounce of any kind of funny business.  Zero buck, bolt, and the most minimal reactivity or spookiness. He’s the type that as you’re walking towards him and happen to trip and fall but catch yourself on him as you’re going down, he stands perfectly steady and doesn’t even flinch. He’s also the type that as the barn cat jumps out of nowhere and knocks all of the training flags and a jacket off of the arena railing JUST as you come trotting by, he doesn’t even flinch and continues on his way without a worry. This is a disposition trait that I find to be extremely attractive!  On the ground he is completely gentle, can be touched everywhere and is always easy to handle.

Diego has hundreds of trail and mountain miles under his belt.  He's happy to walk out in front, ride in the middle, take up the back of the line, or is just as happy heading out alone on a solo adventure.  Water crossings, bridges, boggy areas, deadfall, thick brush, steep terrain, opening and closing gates those rickety back-country gates, you name it, he’s done it.  He’s logged a considerable number of miles in Yellowstone National Park; we’ve ridden past bison and geysers, through swarms of tourists, walked over piles of bear scat and tracks, he’s handled it all without a hiccup. He’s ponied colts, pulled pack strings, is safe with dogs and doesn’t mind when a mountain biker whizzes by. He’s been on many camping trips; he high-lines, hobbles, respects a single strand of electric fence, and is easy to travel with.

As great as he is in the backcountry, he’s equally as solid in town.  He’s absolutely traffic safe; I’ve ridden him down the road to the bar, he proudly packed the Montana flag and helped lead the Montana State Homecoming Parade, I’ve even ridden him around town through the subdivisions by himself.  I personally don’t have driving equipment but he’s happy to drag logs, pull a sled of kids through the snow, and I’ve even driven him while sitting in one of those little red Radio flyer wagons behind him (see video!).  He’s not *technically* broke to drive but he’s pretty darn close!

Back in the arena, he’s been getting used in the lesson program giving walk/trot lessons to beginner and intermediate kids and adults.  Diego is the lesson horse I choose on the days when snow is loudly sliding off the arena roof or it’s windy with a storm blowing in and the rest of the horses are going wild; Diego doesn’t mind and has proven to always be solid, reliable, and non-reactive in those situations.

Physically he’s a lovely size and shape; tall but not giant with excellent feet that our farrier always compliments.  He’s narrow enough to not make your knees and hips hurt at the end of the day and has nice straight legs with good bone. He’s been regularly vaccinated and dewormed and had his teeth floated in the fall of ’22.  Diego has lived turned out on pasture and also in a smaller pen with a netted round bale.  In the herd, he usually lands in the middle of the pecking order and is overall an easy horse to have on the property.

Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions about Diego; it’s important to me that both Diego and his new human are a perfect fit and will be happy, safe, and successful in their future together.
